On March 1, 2012, the American Center for Elemental Music and Movement became a legal public non-profit corporation organized under the statutes of the State of New Jersey. The Center is classified as a public charity by both the State of New Jersey and the Federal Government.
On June 21, 2012, following an extensive application process, the Internal Revenue Service granted ACEMM tax-exempt status under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
What Does This Mean? Most importantly, 501 (c) (3) status allows donors to take the amount of a cash contribution or the value of donated good or services as a deduction from the donor’s earned income when filing his/her federal tax return. This results in a portion of the donation being returned to the donor as a tax credit.501 (c) (3) tax exempt status is granted to both public charities and private foundations that exist for the public good. ACEMM is not required to pay federal or state taxes on any income or donations received. A strict set of guidelines must be followed to insure that the tax exempt status is maintained year to year.
Example A donor wishing to support music and movement in our schools and communities makes a $100 contribution to ACEMM. If the donor is in the 20% tax bracket, upon declaring the $100 donation on Schedule A of his/her federal tax return, he/she will receive $20 ( 20% of $100) tax credit towards his/her tax due or tax refund. A higher tax bracket will provide a higher return of the original donation.
Proof of 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status is required to deduct charitable donations from a donor’s tax return. Every donation made directly to ACEMM receives a thank you letter from our secretary with our Employer Identification Number (EIN) and the amount of your donation. This letter can be used as proof of the contribution.
